youtube helps cbs and tv moves online
As mentioned in this ecommerce well book excerpt (on market segmentation), despite the advent of the age of the internet
it does not necessarily follow that entities like “traditional†TV stations will become less proï¬table. After all, the “traditional†movie business did not have to become less proï¬table with the advent of the video cassette tape. “Entertainment†has been around for a long time, and people have always found ways to monetize it.
There was an interesting press release by cbs suggesting that youtube might be increasing cbs viewership.
The numbers were quite interesting suggesting 5% and 7% increases for two different shows. One possible explanation might be that individuals were using youtube as an instrument of “discovery.” Having learnt about a show on youtube they later choose to watch the show on cbs.
Paidcontent blog notes that further analysis might be warranted including a better attempt to quantify other possible contributory factors.
PC magazine radio also commented on the apparent correlation. As did Pete Cashmore on his blog.

A number of tv networks have been making their shows accessible online.
After seeing an interview with a top network executive, I did notice one (there are probably many) interesting explanation. Apparently, their statistics suggest that their viewers may, on occasion, miss episodes from their favorite shows (for whatever reason). Some shows today have themes that are developed across several episodes and if one misses an episode one may begin to become confused, or lose interest in the show. Having online access available (presumably with commercials, at some point) helps solve the viewer retention problem.
