Stumbleupon juice: How influential are your stumbles?

Tim Nash on the venture skills blog has an interesting post speculating on the algorithm used to calculate the stumbleupon “juice” a stumbler has. They claim to have empirically tested their theories using a few volunteers.

For example, one theory states that being an “early” thumbs up on a url that later becomes popular will give you more “juice”. “Juice” is the strength of your ability to recomend a website or post. So “votes” with more “juice” would send more visitors to the recomended resource.

Other important points include the number of thumbs up, written reviews and number of fans. So, having more fans, could make your “votes” more influential.

Tim Nash also theorizes that the resource discovery process is important. For example, stumbling along on the toolbar and giving a thumbs up is more highly weighted than discovering a website from a mailing list and then voting for it.
